The Companion+
Back in FULL FORCE! This is a faithful reproduction of the Vintage Shin-ei FY-2 Companion fuzz pedal with some much needed upgrades for the modern workflow! It has a boost circuit added to bring the volume level up and make the pedal more usable live. Nothing worse than stomping on a pedal and getting an underwhelming volume drop, the boost circuit fixes this while retaining the inherent grind this tone box is known for. It also has a scoop control which helps take some of the muffled sound out that can occur with certain pickups and added more versatility to the pedal. With the scoop control all the way left(counter-clockwise) you can still get the stock sound of the original companion fuzz as well. Every component is hand selected and ear tested before the pedal ships out. We spend a lot of time just ear selecting the right transistors(not all are created equal!) It has the cool 'trashy' fuzz sound this circuit is known for. The knob layout is the same as the original model: Fuzz on the left and the Volume control on the right respectively. It is nicely hand wired and features premium Gorva 3pdt true bypass switches, neutrik jacks, alpha pots. It runs on a standard center negative 9v boss style adapter or 9V battery. Each unit is solid and built to last with a rugged case and lock washers so jacks and pots don't shift and move around over time.
Aside from the amazing look we spared no expense to recreate the original circuit board material(who does this?) and components. Most schematics on the interwebs call for 2sc536 transistors but as we started cracking vintage Companion Fuzz’s open over the years we noticed various types were used. Our favorite sounding Companion had a pair of Matsushita 2SC828’s. This pedal had the perfect balance of grit and grime without being too ’overblown’. Through some digging we were able to find a source for the original transistors and the first 100 Companion+’s will feature matched pairs of this rare and obsolete transistor. How cool!
